See No, Hear No, Speak No

'See No, Hear No, Speak No' | Acrylic on Canvas | 30"x 40" | copyright 2015
I completed this painting last week, keeping with the cool color theme. I really wanted to focus on shading and color temperature. I really like the way it turned out but I wish I would have put some more into the background, yet it was time to move on.

Bob Marley Portrait

Bob | Acrylic on canvas | 6" x 12"
I wanted to paint a tribute to one of my favorite musicians. I created a drawing of this same picture awhile back but it was nice to actually make it into a painting.

Color and Light

Update: Finished
Trying to work on color and light more. I painted this over the past weekend. Its a smaller size painting, I seem to be able to get those done much quicker...go figure. I may try and turn this into a series of paintings. Still working on this one but should be done today, only a few more layers are needed I feel. #wip

Beyond the Door

Acrylic on Wood
I think I dreamt about this image cause I had it in my head for the longest time. I finally was able to bring it into this world. I call this painting "Beyond the Door". Its painted on an old piece of particle board I found a long time ago. I got some nice texture from the wood grain.

Nicky Davis' Bigfoot character

Modeled this character awhile back for a local artist. Nicky Davis designed the character and I made it in 3ds max. He has some pretty cool character designs and awesome paintings. Check him out: www.nickydavis.com

Scratchboard drawing

Another oldie from 2006. Created with scratchboard. I love that medium, it can be very expressive.

Silueta

Untitled - Updated 5/21/14

Started laying down some color last night, getting the under painting going. Next step is to just start adding more and more layers. First painting of the new year, hoping this year is a productive one. This piece is untitled so far, its acrylic on canvas, 20x20. I'll be posting more updates soon.

Heydar Aliyev International Airport Baku New Terminal

This was one of the first architectural animations I have worked on professionally. It took myself and team of 3d artist at Fuel FX (animation studio I work for here in Houston) about a month to create this animation. The company had another studio create the animation in the past but were needing an update so they had us recreate it. I was responsible for modeling the exterior, texturing some of the assets, camera animation, lighting, rendering, and post production.

PetroEd 2010 Season's Greetings

Worked on this back in 2010. I was in charge of modeling and texturing the living room interior, and animating the characters.

The Father, The Sun, and the Holy Ghost

"The Father, The Sun, and the Holy Ghost" 60"x36" acrylic on canvas. I had started this painting back in 2008 as a simple black and white concept, over the years I kept changing the composition until I finally figured out what I was trying to show. Kept working on it a little bit here and there, but it was the biggest painting I have attempted to this date. Fast forward 5 years later and I am finally finished. It feels good to finally put this one to bed.

Julius Caesar zbrush sculpt

I was doing some ZBrush work, practicing my sculpting and came up with this. I was using a bust of Julius Caesar as reference.

dreams for free

Dreams for Free by Paul Castro

I started this painting about 2 years ago. I got the initial underpainting done quickly but it took me awhile to figure out where I was going with it. Plus I like to take my time adding layer upon layer.

gangstas!

This was a class assignment for my modeling class. We were able to create whatever scene we wanted. I decided to create some models for these characters I had sketched in my sketchbook. I had a lot of fun creating this image. I am thinking about creating a short animation using these characters. Modeled and rendered in 3ds Max with Mental Ray.

bob marley drawing

Bob Marley is one of my favorite musical artists. Not just for his music but his message. His music will live on forever. I enjoyed creating this drawing cause it brought me back to heavy use of contrast and shading with pencil.

(Update) See No, Hear No, Speak No

Just another sketchbook drawing post. (Update-3/30/15) Didn't realize when I was drawing this that it would be a painting, but it is now. See my latest post in March for a look at the finished piece.

under the pink moon

Under the Pink Moon by Paul Castro

I was listening to alot of Nick Drake when I painted this. Hence the name of the painting. First try at painting on old piece of wood I found laying around outside my apartments at the time.

human behaviour

I created this image using quite a few stock photos that I had gathered and just ended up mashing them together to make a surreal kind of image.

girl in window: rembrandt recreation

They say the best way to learn how to paint is to try and recreate from the masters. I tried my hand at recreating a Rembrandt painting.

Another favorite musician of mine who I decided to pay homage to. I really enjoyed developing the strong color contrast on this piece.

Kiss Hug Kiss by Paul Castro

One of my first paintings I had ever done. A friend of mine once told me that I was channeling picasso when I created this one. If only...

Just You Wait and See by Paul Castro

atom and eve

I was listening to Ani DiFrancos' poem called "Reprieve" when I thought of this painting. The poem was major inspiration for me during this time.

Siddhartha Statue

This painting was such a great learning experience for me. Adding layer upon layer trying to achieve a worn metal look in acrylic was difficult and frustrating at times but totally worth it.

Desaturated

I created an animation back in 2009 for a contest on aniboom.com. The premise was to create an animated music video for one of Radioheads' songs off the album In Rainbows. Well I made a few changes to it and did some more post work to it to get it to a more polished look. There are still things that I see in it that I want to change but I think it's better just to call this one a learning process and move on. Either way I still enjoy this video and I am itching to make another animation soon. The video makes more sense if you can understand the lyrics. Here is a link Reckoner Lyrics

sketch theatre: freak on a leash

Submitted this drawing to the Sketch Theatre monthly sketch contest. I think subconsciously I drew a lot of inspiration from the Twilight Zone movie, where this wicked looking rabbit pops out of a top hat. That thing used to scare the shit out of my when I was a kid...but it was still a cool looking creature design.

between good and evil

Found this old drawing I did quite a few years back. It is on 18x24 paper. I finally got the chance to scan it in and piece it together in Photoshop. I am going to make it into a digital piece, and I can't wait to get cracking on it. There are a lot of elements I am going to have to fix, I can already see a few off hand, but I think it has potential to make a great portfolio piece.
